There’s
an explosion of new traditions that emerges from (or merges with) the
traditions of the society and communities in which we live today. The
next Paj Ntaub Voice theme and publication is on “family
traditions.”
We
all grow up surrounded by different traditions. It tastes, smells,
looks, feels, and hears differently between one individual to
another. They serve different functions, becoming one person's
foundation and identity while to others, it is their comfort food,
medium, and/or nesting place. Whatever family traditions exist,
traditions are constantly being recycled, re-taught, and re-invented to
define who we are as an individual, as a family, and as a people.
PNV
invite you to evoke the senses, entice the palette, and pull on your
heart strings as you examine family traditions, its evolution during
and across historical displacement, war and political
turmoil throughout the Hmong Diaspora. What family traditions
did you grow up with? Which ones surrounded you?
Which traditions do you feel is strongest in
the Hmoob community? What traditions are you creating for
yourself? Who gets to create traditions, or are the ritual makers? How
are traditions started and shaped? Submit your creative writing
and visual art to reflect the shifts, creation, re-creation, and
realities of family traditions.
